Can Dental Implants Move?
Dental implants are a popular, long-lasting dental restoration that look and feel like natural teeth. From
single tooth implants to full-mouth restorations, dental implants can completely transform a person's smile and can help to foster a stronger, healthier mouth. If you're considering dental implants, you likely have many questions about the process and about the results you can expect. The experienced and professional team at Royal Dental Care is here to help!
Can Dental Implants Move?
One of the most common questions people ask about dental implants is whether or not they can move. The answer to this question is no, once a dental implant is placed and has healed it should remain stable in your mouth.
Dental implants are made from titanium, a material that fuses with your jawbone as it heals. This process is called “osseointegration” and it creates a strong bond between the implant and your jawbone. This bond makes the dental implant stable, though it doesn't mean that the implant can't ever move. If there is too much force on an individual tooth implant or full-mouth restoration, then the dental implants can shift.
However, this movement is usually minor and can be easily corrected by your dentist. Your dentist will likely recommend a stabilizing device such as a splint or bridge to help keep the dental implants in place. In extreme cases, like if an implant has shifted too much, then it may need to be replaced with a new one.
Are Dental Implants Painful?
Another common misconception about dental implants is that the placement process and healing will be painful. However, this is not the case! At Royal Dental Care, we use a combination of local anesthesia and sedation to ensure your comfort during implant placement. Most patients report mild discomfort at most and some don't feel any pain at all! Additionally, after your dental implants have been placed and the healing process is complete, you should be able to enjoy all of the same types of activities that you did before the procedure. You can even eat your favorite foods without worry.
